Why electric jetboards are the perfect toy for the superyacht industry
Peter Ruwe, Founder & CEO, Ewake Germany GmbH
For years, the superyacht industry has set the pace for innovation in luxury, technology and environmental responsibility. From hybrid propulsion systems to AI-enabled navigation, yacht design continues to evolve toward quieter, cleaner and more intelligent solutions. Now, that same shift is transforming what guests expect from onboard entertainment. Among the new generation of water toys, electric jetboards have emerged as a standout, offering adrenaline-packed performance with none of the noise, fumes or fuss of their fuel-powered predecessors while providing the unmatched feeling of unity with the water as you glide effortlessly across its surface.
The rise of electric jetboards represents more than just a new gadget, it’s a response to a deeper question: how do we deliver excitement without compromising the calm, sustainable luxury that defines superyachting today? The answer, increasingly, is electric.
A QUIET REVOLUTION IN WATER RECREATION
The concept of a motorised board isn’t new. For years, fuel-powered jetboards dominated the market despite significant limitations: disruptive noise levels, environmental impact, complex maintenance requirements and operational challenges.
In the past few years, with the development of the electric boards, a new player entered the luxury water toys market – the electric jetboard. It provides instant, silent thrust, requires no fuel logistics and integrates seamlessly into the operational rhythms of a yacht. Today’s advanced lithium battery systems deliver up to 45 minutes of ride time with fast charging turnaround, often under two hours, enabling multiple daily sessions.
According to the 2024 Global Marine Leisure Report, sales of electric personal watercraft have grown by 23% year-over- year, with much of that demand coming from the superyacht segment. The same report shows that over 68% of new builds above 30 metres now include at least one electric water toy – jetboards leading the list.
WHY SUPERYACHTS ARE GOING ELECTRIC
This isn’t just about performance, it’s about alignment. Superyachts represent the pinnacle of luxury and owners are increasingly looking for experiences that combine thrill with tranquility and indulgence with sustainability.
Several key factors are driving this shift:
- Silent operation: guests can enjoy high-speed rides without disrupting the peace of a secluded bay while at anchor.
- Zero emissions: no oil, fumes, or exhaust, electric boards align with growing environmental priorities.
- Low maintenance: unlike combustion engines, electric drives require minimal upkeep- no spark plugs, carburetors or fuel filters to manage.
- Operational simplicity: for crew, the ability to charge a board like a laptop and skip the fuel runs saves time and reduces safety concerns.
And then there’s the regulatory factor. Coastal jurisdictions are becoming increasingly strict about noise and emissions in marine protected areas. Silent, emission- free toys are not just a luxury, they’re a practical and necessary solution.
DESIGNED FOR YACHT INTEGRATION
What sets modern electric jetboards apart is their intentional design for the yacht environment. These aren’t off-the-shelf consumer products, but rather precision tools crafted with the constraints and expectations of yachting in mind.
At Ewake Germany, we’ve built our approach around the specific needs of yacht owners, captains and crew. That means lightweight carbon fibre construction, compact storage options, completely customised design to match the look and feel of the yacht, and marine-grade durability. Our boards are saltwater resistant, impact-tested and optimised for seamless charging on board and for in-water battery swaps. We work closely with build teams, chase boat operators and management companies to ensure integration is never an afterthought.
More importantly, today’s boards are built for simplicity. Guests can be introduced with minimal instruction and intuitive controls, allowing both novices and experienced riders to enjoy the same exhilarating performance. For charters in particular, this ease of use has proven invaluable, offering high entertainment value without burdening crew with complex prep or supervision.
MEETING THE NEW EXPECTATIONS OF OWNERS AND GUESTS
The changing demographics of yacht owners are also influencing onboard toy choices. The average age of first-time yacht buyers has dropped to 46, and many are sustainability- minded who prioritise innovation over tradition. According to the Superyacht Intelligence Agency, 70% of owners under 50 actively seek out electric alternatives across tenders, and toys and electric jetboards fit perfectly within this vision.
LOOKING AHEAD
The rise of electric jetboards is not a passing trend, at Ewake Germany, our mission has always been to deliver that Made in Germany perfect fit: high-performance equipment that integrates effortlessly and elevates the onboard experience in every way. And while we don’t believe in hype for hype’s sake, it’s clear to us and to the industry, that the future of superyacht fun is electric.
